Jupiter and Saturn meet together in conjunction approximately every 20 years. We have the push from Jupiter to take chances, to grow and expand, while Saturn is there to caution discipline, set limitations, and preserve boundaries. These conjunctions tend to usher in a new era until the next Jupiter Saturn conjunction.
These conjunctions also tend to occur in the same element (earth, fire, air, or water) for a certain amount of time, which can flavor the conjunctions in those time frames. The conjunction of 21 December 2020 will be the start of 139 years of Jupiter and Saturn conjunctions in air signs until a Jupiter Saturn conjunction in a water sign in 2159.
Before this, we did have three short Jupiter Saturn conjunctions in a row in 1980 and 1981 (both Jupiter and Saturn retrograded) in an air sign. This was a brief interlude of the Jupiter Saturn conjunctions in earth signs.
Jupiter and Saturn had their conjunctions in earth signs from 1842 to 1980 when there were the three quick air sign conjunctions. Then the 2000 Jupiter Saturn conjunction was in an earth sign again.

Why is the Jupiter Saturn conjunction significant?
Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn and Aquarius, is the planet associated with restrictions, limitations, and boundaries. Saturn is the greater malefic, meaning that it is often associated with bringing difficult or trying circumstances.
Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius and Pisces, is the planet associated with expansion, exploration, wisdom, optimism, and enthusiasm. Jupiter is considered the greater benefic, meaning that it is linked with good or beneficial events.
Saturn takes approximately 29 years to cycle through all the zodiac signs and spends about 2 and a half years in a zodiac sign. Jupiter takes around 12 years to cycle through all the zodiac signs and spends about 12 months in each sign. Approximately every 20 years, Jupiter and Saturn met up in an exact conjunction, which tends to flavor the next 20 years ahead.
Although we had that taste of a Jupiter Saturn conjunction in an air sign in 1980 and 1981, the following conjunction (2000) was in an earth sign. This Jupiter Saturn conjunction sets the stage for the next 139 years of only air sign Jupiter Saturn conjunctions.
The astrological chart for the December 2020 Jupiter Saturn conjunction

The astrological conditions of the Jupiter Saturn conjunction
The upcoming 21 December 2020 Jupiter Saturn conjunction occurs in Aquarius, an air sign. As Saturn rules Aquarius, this is a sign that Saturn is comfortable in. In Aquarius, Saturn is future-focused, potentially revolutionary, and humanitarian, but not overly warm and cuddly.
Jupiter in Aquarius has no special dignity, but this is an improvement from Jupiter being in Capricorn, which it has been for the prior twelve months. As Aquarius is an air sign, there is a desire for knowledge and intellectual pursuits. As Jupiter is associated with wisdom, knowledge, and expansion, this should be a relatively comfortable position. Some issues may arise because Aquarius is a fixed sign, which may lead to dogmatic or condescending behavior.
Interestingly, at the time of the Jupiter Saturn conjunction, Mercury will have just moved past its superior conjunction with the Sun. Mercury will not have moved outside the one-degree orb of the conjunction with the Sun. Because of this, Mercury could be considered Cazimi by some or in excellent condition. Even though both the Sun and Mercury are in aversion to Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius, and thus have no relationship to each other, I thought this interesting to note. Air signs are often quite intellectual, and Mercury is often considered in a similar vein.
Perhaps a little more worrying is the applying Mars square Pluto aspect happening at the Jupiter Saturn conjunction. This is the final of three Mars-Pluto squares for 2020.
The first Mars-Pluto square was on 13 August 2020. The second was 9 October 2020 when Mars was retrograde, and the third will be on 23 December 2020.
Mars will move into Taurus on 6 January 2021. It will join Uranus, and both Mars and Uranus will be in a sign-based square to Jupiter and Saturn until 3 March 2021 when Mars moves into Gemini. While Mars will have moved on, Uranus is in Taurus until 2026, so it will remain in a sign-based square to Jupiter and Saturn during their entire time in Aquarius.
