The Lunar Eclipse of 15 may 2022 is a Total Lunar Eclipse. During a Total Lunar Eclipse, the Sun and Moon are exactly opposite each side of the Earth. The darkest part of Earth’s shadow (umbra) is cast upon the entire Moon but some Sunlight still reaches the Moon. The sunlight filters out most of the blue light from the Earth’s atmosphere when this happens and the Moon appears to be red. This is known as a Blood Moon.
The website TimeandDate.com says this eclipse “Regions seeing, at least, some parts of the eclipse: South/West Europe, South/West Asia, Africa, Much of North America, South America, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Antarctica.”
The Total Lunar Eclipse will be occurring at 25° Scorpio 17′. The Sabian Symbol for this eclipse degree is 26° Scorpio – “Indians making camp.”

What is a Lunar Eclipse?
A lunar eclipse occurs at the time of a Full Moon (Sun and Moon opposite each other/ 180 degrees apart). When the Sun, Earth, and Moon are all in alignment during a Full Moon, and the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon, a lunar eclipse occurs. It is safe to look at lunar eclipses.
Full Moons are traditionally a time of completion, harvest, or culmination. A lunar eclipse amplifies the full Moon’s power and may bring sudden change or bring something that has been hidden out in the open. Lunar eclipses tend to be associated with endings, more emotional and focused on change from within.
You are unlikely to feel the full impact of this eclipse unless you have natal or secondary progressed planets that closely aspect the eclipse degree (25° Scorpio 17′).
Astrological conditions of the 15 May 2022 Total Lunar Eclipse
The Total Lunar Eclipse takes place at 25° Scorpio 17′. The Moon is said to be in fall in Scorpio, meaning that it is not able to comfortably carry out the significations of the Moon. Also perhaps complicating matters, is that the Sun (opposite the Moon) is very close to the degree of the fixed star Algol (associated with the Medusa, and losing your head).
The planet Mars rules Scorpio in traditional astrology, and so it is the ruler of this Lunar Eclipse. Mars is in the mutual water sign of Pisces, and in his own triplicity, bound and face. This gives Mars some essential dignity, empowering Mars to stride ahead, take action and act courageously.
Mars is trine (a positive helpful aspect) the Lunar Eclipse degree, so this should help matters somewhat. Mars is also sextile the Sun. This should energize Mars to do what is needed with regard to what may be revealed or exposed during this Lunar Eclipse.
However, Mars is conjunct Neptune at this time and Neptune can tend to sap some of the natural energy of Mars. It could also mean that Mars pushes itself too far, too soon, as the fog of Neptune blinds it to its limits.
The blending of Neptune and Mars can make for a spiritual or idealistic urge to the Mars drive for action. Negatively expressed it could lead to martyrdom.
The South Node is with the Moon, so this is a South Node Lunar Eclipse. South Node Lunar Eclipses can mean that we need to deal with matters from the past before moving forward, or ahead with our plans.
Saturn, the greater malefic squares the eclipse degree, which may bring delays, set-backs and just the general feeling of running up against a brick wall. Saturn loves to say no.
Saturn is also square the North and South Node, a placement said to be the “bendings of the nodes”. Planets at the bendings of the nodes can signify a crisis of some type. As Saturn is more than 2° away from making the square to the nodes, perhaps this will not be too severe.
Wrapping matters up, we have Mercury, which is currently retrograde. When Mercury is retrograde, matters tend to be prone to delays, mix-ups and misunderstandings.
With the two malefics (Mars and Saturn) making close aspects to this Lunar Eclipse, the Moon in the sign of its fall, and opposed by the fixed star Algol, I am anticipating that this is not going to be an overly joyful eclipse.
Mars is quite strong at this time, but may not know or realize its limitations. Saturn is in a sign that it rules, and therefore strong as well. Saturn is there to slow things down, and set boundaries.
For those with natal planets or chart points closely aspecting the eclipse degree, there may be endings that are quite sobering. Unexpected matters may arise or be revealed, but they may be limiting in some way.
For all that there may be a strong desire to push through, to bulldoze the path ahead, it may just not be possible. At least for right now. Patience may be what is needed at this time.
