Lunar Eclipse – 4 July 2020

The lunar eclipse of the 4th of July 2020 is penumbral, which often looks like just a regular Full Moon. However, timeanddate.com says that the “Moon may turn slightly darker than a usual Full Moon for those in much of North and South America, and Africa during the maximum phase of this penumbral lunar eclipse.”

The Sabian Symbol for this eclipse degree is 14° Cancer – “A very old man facing a vast dark space to the northeast.

What is a Lunar Eclipse?

A lunar eclipse occurs at the time of a Full Moon (Sun and Moon opposite each other/ 180 degrees apart). When the Sun, Earth, and Moon are all in alignment during a Full Moon, and the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon, a lunar eclipse occurs. It is safe to look at lunar eclipses.

Full Moons are traditionally a time of completion, harvest, or culmination. A lunar eclipse amplifies the full Moon’s power and may bring sudden change or bring something that has been hidden out in the open. Lunar eclipses tend to be associated with endings, more emotional, and focused on change from within.

You are unlikely to feel the full impact of this eclipse unless you have natal or secondary progressed planets that closely aspect the eclipse degree (13° Capricorn 37′).

What is a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse?

During a penumbral lunar eclipse, the Sun and Moon are aligned with Earth. However, they are not exactly opposite each side of the Earth as in a total lunar eclipse. In a penumbral eclipse, the alignment of Sun, Moon, and Earth means that only the lightest outer shadow of the Earth (penumbra) casts a shadow on the Moon. It can be hard to tell when a penumbral eclipse is occurring. It is not as noticeable as the total and partial lunar eclipses.

Astrological conditions of the July 2020 Lunar Eclipse

At the time of the Lunar Eclipse, there are no close aspects to either the Sun or Moon. However, there are a few significant events that will have happened not long before the Lunar Eclipse.

Jupiter and Pluto will have had their 2nd of 3 conjunctions for the year on the 30th of June. The third and final conjunction of Jupiter and Pluto will be on the 12th of November. It will be the last Jupiter Pluto conjunction until 2033. The Jupiter Pluto conjunction is about expansion (Jupiter) and transformation (Pluto) of structures (Capricorn).

The Sun will have had its inferior conjunction with retrograde Mercury on the 30th of June. The inferior conjunction marks the midpoint of the retrograde Mercury cycle. This point in the retrograde cycle can mark a time when we want to act on all the matters we have been thinking and ruminating over during the retrograde phase.

Saturn moved back into Capricorn on the 1st of July. Saturn transited into Aquarius on the 21st of March but soon stationed retrograde. Saturn will remain in Capricorn until it enters Aquarius on the 16th of December 2020.

Mars moved into the sign of Aries on the 27th of June. Mars will be retrograde from the 9th of September to the 13th of November, because of this retrograde, Mars will remain in Aries for just over six months. This puts Mars in a sign based square (stressful) position to those planets in Capricorn.

However, this is at least the start of all the Capricorn events for 2020 coming to a close. This Lunar Eclipse will be the last eclipse in Capricorn until 2027.

Planets in Capricorn have dominated a lot of 2020, especially with Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto transiting through the sign. We started the year with the Saturn Pluto conjunction in Capricorn in January, which heralded restrictions, limitations, and structures’ transformation. Saturn will get close (about 3°) to Pluto again in late September, but not close enough to exactly conjoin Pluto as it did in January.

Jupiter and Saturn moving into Aquarius in December, and conjoining on the 21st of December should hopefully mark an end to a very trying year. It will be nearly 11 years until Jupiter will return to Capricorn and just over 26 years for Saturn.
